EARTH RE-ENTRY CAPSULES WITH NEW MULTIFUNCIONAL THERMAL PROTECTION SYSTEMS

CRITICAL Materials S.A. is part of the Portuguese consortium - ACC , ISQ and PIEP - that has finished a new and radical design of a Crushable Thermal Protection System for an Earth Re–entry Capsule. CRITICAL is the responsible for the engineering design and the multi-physics simulations of the capsule. The complex simulations performed by CRITICAL were focused on the behaviour of the multifunctional cTPS structure that simultaneously acts as a heat shield for planetary re–entry and brings an adequate impact response during hard landing. The final testing validations of the solution, with a drop-test from 80 m and thermal behaviour test, were performed on July 2016 in the ISQ facilities at Castelo Branco, Portugal, and the analysis of the correlation between testing and design results were finalised on October 2016, finalising a two year development contract with ESA – European Space Agency – with extraordinary success.
