Intelli SHM
A partnership between the companies within the Critical group, Critical Materials and Critical Software, was selected in the scope of the European program CleanSky - JTI for the development of a new generation of systems for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) in aircrafts.
Motivation
This ultimate purpose of this project is to lower the costs associated with the aircraft maintenance and inspection, through an effective monitoring of structural damage.
Scope
Intelli-SHM project is integrated in the GRA-LW - Green Regional Aircraft - Low Weight Configuration development platform, led by Alenia Aeronautica S.P.A.. The project aims at developing integrated systems for monitoring, diagnostic and prognostic of components for the next generation aircrafts, allowing for a more precise evaluation of the their structural integrity. Intelli-SHM will address the following topics:
•Design of an integrated SHM system, with reduced number of sensors;
•Optimum location of sensors;
•Sensor fault detection methods,
•Improved diagnostic and prognostic tools.
Innovation
The proposed approach is based on the customization of proprietary VS2TM core technology, in order to develop enhanced diagnostic and prognostic capabilities. This new generation of SHM systems will allow, in the near future, for a more efficient management of the inspection and maintenance processes, along with gains in the final weight of the "aerostructure", with clear advantages in the aircraft's performance.
