VS2 Core Technology
VS2 project aims at developing a proof-of-concept for an innovative structural health monitoring, SHM, system, based on the instrumentation/sensor technology and virtualization of the physical behaviour of critical components.
Motivation
VS2 project motivation relates to the hard, time-consuming and costly Inspection & Maintenance associated with operations of aircrafts. The project will deliver a proof of concept for a new product aimed at reducing significantly the time/cost of MRO (Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul) tasks, and at improving aircraft safety.
Scope
VS2 comprises an advanced data acquisition and processing system from a multi-sensor network, and a comprehensive decision making support tool based in physical & virtual data to make a diagnostic and prognostic of the component structural health. This later is composed of:
•virtual model of component representative of its behaviour combined with an adequate structural simulation solver
•database management tool •module for diagnosis & prognosis of component structural health, integrating real and virtual data.
Innovation
The innovative features of VS2 TM are related to the combination of real & virtual data allowing:
- reduced nº of sensors and related hardware;
- detailed and continuous description of component status supporting decisions with respect to component inspection/maintenance/substitution;
- building of a comprehensive database of aircraft critical components behaviour, which is translated in a differentiated knowledge for Inspection & Maintenance and structural design.
Critical Materials is being developing VS2TM core technology during the last year and a half, with the support of QREN - Portuguese National Strategic Reference Framework -, which allows Critical Materials to position itself as a potential supplier of diagnostic and prognostic technology for "aerostructures", in both future projects or in the repurposing of working aircrafts.
